Fiction Workshop

Bart Thornton
Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders

June 9 – July 4 • 9 a.m – 1:30 p.m.
(Class on Thursday, June 19) (No Class on Friday, July 4)
$1,095 per session

In Fiction Workshop, students will be introduced to a range of strategies and styles for writing creative contemporary fiction. We will read several short stories and a novel. We will also screen several TV shows and films, examining the “tricks of the trade” for writers working in these visual media. You will have the opportunity to “pitch,” write, share and revise a substantive original novella, series of stories, screenplay or teleplay. If you’re interested in creative expression and mass media, this could be a delightful way to spend part of your summer.

Qualified Collegiate students who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English — may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing.

Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English department for seven years at Collegiate School and served as the Dean of Faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism and an interdisciplinary course called Anarchy and the Avant-Garde.
