Rising 5th Graders – rising 8th Graders June 16 – 20 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (No Camp on Thursday, June 19)$185Do you like words? Do you like music? What about recording? Do you like creating something from nothing? Join local singer/songwriter (and Spanish educator) Emily Roig for this music appreciation camp. In this camp, we will listen to and share the music, bands and singers that we love to listen to and discuss what music is; learn about differing approaches to songwriting and the creative process, discover and discuss the components of a well-written song and play around with music production software and recording. We will look at a variety of genres and styles of music and writing - everything from country to rap to folk to pop and beyond. We will also test out a variety of exercises and tricks to help boost our creativity and try our hand at writing an actual song from scratch. You do not have to be a musician or play an instrument to be involved in this fun, musical adventure. All you need to bring is a curious spirit and an ability to collaborate and work well with others.
By the end of the week, we’ll have a deeper appreciation for music, songwriters and hopefully, some musical creations to share Emily is a soulful folk singer-songwriter and worship leader originally from St. Louis, Missouri. Emily spent three years honing her songwriting skills in Nashville, Tennessee, where she wore many hats in the music business and released a variety of musical projects, including the award-winning single "Skin.” From there, she heeded the call to move to Richmond, Virginia, where she spent four years on staff at Hope Church as a worship leader and songwriter and released multiple projects, including her latest single "You Are Loved." Emily also has a passion for Spanish and education and currently teaches Middle School Spanish at Collegiate while also performing, writing, recording and producing original music in her free time. Sometimes she even writes songs in Spanish.
