• Academics

  Students who wish to spend extra time in academic areas they enjoy may choose from clubs that offer math and reading activities. Fourth Grade students run the Cougar Savings Bank which offers experience in areas ranging from customer service to calculations.

  Cougar Savings Club
  Collegiate's Lower School bank is open to all students (Junior Kindergarten - 4th Grades) on C day mornings 7:50–8:20 a.m. for banking transactions. It is totally run by students with assistance from SunTrust Bank, parent volunteers and the teacher advisor, Ms. Joya Sellers.
  
  Early Morning Math
  Students in Grades 2-4 may participate in fun activities that focus on visual thinking, brain teasers, math board games and logical thinking. The time is designed to be social and fun as well as educational for math minds.
  
  Chat 'N Chew
  Chat 'N Chew is a voluntary lunch time reading opportunity for students in Grades 3 and 4. Its goal is to reinforce the enjoyment of reading in an informal atmosphere as well as to encourage sharing of ideas with others. One lunch time a week, for three successive weeks, a group of approximately four children meet with a parent volunteer to discuss a book read in advance of the meeting. Over brown bag lunches and cafeteria trays, characters emerge, plots are discussed and opinions shared.
  
  Two sessions of Chat 'N Chew are offered during the school year. Students who are interested sign up by book title in advance of each session. Parents who are interested in leading a discussion group may contact the parent Lower School Coordinator listed in your Collegiate Directory.
  
  Library Club
  Students in Grades 3-4 may join the Library Club in order to learn about all aspects of the library. They assist the librarians in many different ways including shelving books for checkout.

  Early Morning Gardening
  Our garden is between the Reynolds Hall and Estes Multipurpose Room. Students and teachers plant and nurture a variety of plants, often related to the curriculum. All students and teachers are a part of the garden’s success. Students in Grades 2-4 may participate in morning chores in the garden, weather permitting, such as watering, weeding, planting and harvesting. Mrs. Smythe will direct garden activities on several days each cycle TBD.
  
  Cougar Pals
  Students new to Collegiate (Grades 1-4) are assigned Cougar Pals who help them feel comfortable at Collegiate. They may get together over the summer and, when school begins, the experienced students will introduce the new students to others in their grade. The Cougar Pals often become friends for life.

• Events

  While Convocation and Pep Rally are all-school events that Lower Schoolers participate in, there are also several others that are special for Lower School each year. They offer off- and on-campus ways for students to get involved in grade level projects and fun.

  Class Field Trips
  When field trips are scheduled, a notice is sent home for parental approval. Seat belts must be provided for all the children when providing transportation in cars. If your child requires a car seat by law, please provide one to be used by carpool drivers for the trip.  All laws must be followed concerning child safety in automobiles. Drivers must be on the school’s approved driver list.
  
  Field Day
  A field day is held for all Lower School students in May. The day is designed to combine healthy competition, group cooperation, physical fitness and fun. Many energetic parent volunteers make this special day a much-anticipated event for our entire community.
  
  An American Mosaic:  From Sea to Shining Sea
  This 4th Grade presentation, held in March, is a culmination of six months of integrated study in social studies, language arts, music and art by the 4th Grade students. The current program includes a grade level performance in Estes Multipurpose Room followed by individual presentations within the 4th Grade classrooms. Parents are invited to attend all activities.
  
  Colonial Day
  This 3rd Grade event is traditionally held in late April. It represents the culmination of the study of life in Colonial America. 3rd Grade students examine the seven parts of the culture and research one particular aspect in depth. Colonial Day includes a grade level presentation in Estes Multipurpose Room as well as viewing student projects in classrooms. Parents are invited to attend all activities.
  
  States’ Fair
  This 2nd Grade program is held in February. Each class is designated as one region of the United States, and students work with a partner to research a wide variety of information about a state in that region. During the course of study, students prepare a project hat to depict the unique qualities of that state to parade through the Lower School hallways. Student projects are showcased in classrooms before traveling to Oates Theatre for the culminating grade level performance. Parents are invited to attend all activities.

• Fine Arts

  Both visual and performing arts opportunities are available to students in Grades K-4. Music lessons on campus, instrumental performances, and Grade level events give them plenty to rehearse, and parents are invited to view the end results.

  Early Morning Art Club
  Students in Grades 2-4 may work on projects in Ms. Bruneau's art room from 7:50 to 8:10 a.m. each morning before school. Students in 1st Grade may work on projects in Ms. Anderson's art room from 7:50-8:10 a.m. on a rotating class basis.
  
  Band Program

  Strings Program
  Private lessons are available for students in Kindergarten - Grade 4 during the school day. Ensembles are held twice a week. For more information, contact Melissa Jones melissa_jones@collegiate-va.org
  
  Piano Lessons

  Chapels
  Lower School Chapels are held throughout the year, usually in the River Road Presbyterian Church. Chapels may include Christian and Jewish holidays as well as focus on our Collegiate values with a variety of guest speakers. Two or three classes in a Grade level lead each chapel. These are for teachers and students only.
  
  Concert of Carols
  In December, all 3rd Grade students present a concert of special songs of the season to parents and friends in River Road Presbyterian Church. Parents are invited to attend.
  
  Kindergarten Chapel
  All Kindergartners present Songs of the Season in River Road Presbyterian Church. Parents are invited to attend.
  
  Cougar Theater Club
  The Cougar Theater Club offers enrichment programs for students in Junior Kindergarten-Grade 4. Theater IV, local musical ensembles and cultural entertainment including out-of-town performing groups present programs in the Estes Multipurpose Room for the children's enjoyment.
  
  1st Grade Plays
  All 1st Grade students will participate in a spring play. Three classes join together to present a musical-type play that incorporates movement, public speaking, singing and memorization of speaking parts. The emphasis for children is to practice language skills and fluency, develop coordination of movement and rhythm, and to experience being a part of a great cast of characters.
