• Activities

  Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in various activities during scheduled Activity Periods throughout the school year. Fifth and 6th Graders have four Activity periods during the eight day rotation. Seventh and 8th Graders have six Activity periods during the eight day rotation. Both full and half year Activities are offered. Students not participating in an Activity will use that period as a study hall.

• Fine Arts

  There are many ways to participate in performing arts activities in the Middle School. These include playing instruments, singing in a chorus, drama, and dance.

  Many Middle School students participate in the Instrumental Music Ensembles which includes Strings, Band, and Guitar. Individual private lessons are offered for piano, percussion, strings, voice, and wind instruments. Around the holidays, hand bell groups are formed and perform in Pageant (girls) or Lessons and Carols (boys).
  
  

  Students can also choose to participate in one of the two school choirs. Students in 5th and 6th Grade can join the 5-6 Chorus, and students in the 7th and 8th Grade can participate in the Select Chorus. All of these musical groups meet during the school day, so there is no conflict with after-school commitments such as athletics in the 7th and 8th Grades.
  
  

  Drama is an exciting opportunity in the Middle School. Each trimester, students who participate in the 6th Grade Drama rotation are able to share scenes and skits with an audience as part of the learning process. Students in 8th Grade can choose to participate in a full stage production that involves most students and offers opportunities in acting and backstage crew.

  
  The opportunity to dance is also part of the opportunities offered in Middle School. Each grade level offers a dance company that performs in a spring concert. Most companies rehearse during the day with the exception of the 5th/6th Grade Dance company which rehearses after school on Wednesdays. Due to high demand, students are chosen for each company through a lottery system once registration is completed in early June.

• Service

  Civic Engagement in the Middle School is based on Collegiate’s core value of community. All service learning programs emphasize the importance of building reciprocal relationships with both individuals and non-profit organizations. Each student’s experience stresses the importance of preparation, action, and reflection. Middle School programs build on volunteer projects undertaken in the Lower School and prepare students for continued contributions in the Upper School.

  Service Learning: Connecting Curriculum to Community
  
  5th Grade: All 5th Grade students will connect their history study of ancient cultures to modern day concerns both locally and globally, thereby enhancing their own understanding of the permanence and necessity of clean water, water scarcity, and the role water played in the development of each of the cultures studied in the 5th Grade. Teachers incorporate this knowledge into experiential learning from other subjects, including science, English, reading, and art to make the experience a holistic one.
  
  6th Grade: 6th Graders build on the 5th Grade service learning program with the study of aquatic life on the James River and participation in the Riparian Area Service Project, designed to reforest the habitat for migratory bird species. Based on the summer reading book Wonder, the service learning program incorporates character education by promoting care and kindness to all living things.
  
  7th Grade: Students learn about local and global needs, as well as the importance of compassion and service, through summer reading and Advisory discussions. Then, once a week for seven weeks, each student serves with a teacher and parent volunteers in the Richmond community.
  
  8th Grade - Envision Richmond uses our city as a hands-on classroom to reinforce skills and learning in the areas of civic engagement, entrepreneurship, inclusion, service learning, and economics.
  
  Stone Soup Project: Following a student assembly and Advisory discussions about homelessness in Richmond, each of the 26 Advisory groups makes brown bag lunches for the homeless over the course of the school year.
  
  Holiday Service Projects: Advisories participate in various service projects during the holidays, including providing holiday gifts for the Henrico Christmas Mother, filling Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army, and adopting families in need.
  
  Special Middle School Council Projects: The Middle School Council representatives research and select one charitable organization to support throughout the school year. The Council members plan special fundraising events and a Middle School student assembly highlighting the organization. Past organizations include the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Andrew’s Buddies, the ALS Association, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Wounded Warriors, the VCU Medical College Hume-Lee Transplant Center, and the Massey Cancer Center.
  
  Additional 5th-8th Grade Service Programs and Opportunities
  Middle School Council representatives co-host an annual Halloween Party for the women and children at the Home Again shelter and organize a Thanksgiving food drive for the Goochland Fellowship and Family Service. Middle School students have the opportunity to volunteer as shift workers for Collegiate’s annual Village Green Fair and serve as holiday helpers with Lower School students at the annual event, Cougar Holiday Express.
  
  5th and 6th Grade Service Club: Members of the 5th and 6th Grade Service Club identify a need in the community, design a service project, and carry out that project. The group is led by an older Middle School student with a passion for service and experience in designing service projects. The group is supervised by a faculty member, but the project is student-driven.
  
  Special 8th Grade Experiences Student Leadership and Service Committee: This committee is comprised of students who have expressed an interest in leadership and service throughout their Middle School years. Committee members work together to plan and implement a service project based on needs in the Richmond community, as well as assist with various Middle School programs throughout the year.
  
  Rising 8th Grade Summer Service Trip: Rising 8th Grade students spend a week during the summer serving in an Appalachian community center where they complete repairs and maintenance on homes and community facilities.
  
  JUMP (Join Us Making Progress) Local Service Camp: Rising 8th Graders plan, organize and implement a week long summer camp involving outdoor education, cooperative games, athletics, reading buddies, and making healthy snacks. Middle School students mentor and work directly with children in the Richmond community.

• Student Government

  Middle School Council is the student government organization. Becoming involved with the Middle School Council provides students with opportunities for learning leadership skills and parliamentary procedure, and having a positive impact on the Middle School community. The Middle School Council works with the faculty and administration in developing a positive Middle School environment and planning and carrying out activities for Middle School students.
  
  The Middle School Council representatives also research and select, with input from their peers, one charitable organization to support throughout the school year. The Council members plan special fundraising events and a Middle School student assembly highlighting the organization.   The Middle School Council is led by two student-elected 8th Graders. Additionally, the Council consists of a total of 31 representatives, one from each advisory group, elected by their classmates to serve for one year. Each representative is responsible for expressing the concerns, questions, and opinions of the members of his or her advisory group, as well as for providing leadership to involve the advisory group in civic engagement and Middle School Council sponsored social activities.
  
  
  
  

   

• Time Out

  Time Out provides supervised recreational activities for students in 5th and 6th Grade. Organized by Parents' Association volunteers, Time Out includes activities such as games, a DJ, contests, and ice cream or snow cone trucks.
