Boys in grades 5 through 12 gathered on Friday at their annual Lessons and Carols service, a tradition at Collegiate for more than 40 years. (more photos here)
The Service of Lessons and Carols dates back to 11th-century England and in the early 20th-century it was revived as a celebration of the end of World War I as well as the holiday season. At Collegiate, former Middle School teacher David Martin introduced the service of readings and songs in 1973.
At this year's service at Second Baptist Church, the 5th Grade boys served as choristers and one boy from each grade level, 6-12, read a lesson followed Upper School history teacher Dr. Brian Ross and Head of School Steve Hickman.
While boys were attending their Lessons and Carols service, girls in grades 5-12 were rehearsing for their Christmas Pageant which takes place Monday and Tuesday, 5:30pm at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road. All are invited to attend.
