Collegiate Lower Schoolers Participate in Annual States Fair Parade

BY ASHLEY JONES
Collegiate 2nd Graders marched around the Lower School this morning in hats representing the 50 United States of America in the annual States Fair Hat Parade.
The students were escorted by their teachers who were also dressed in patriotic
attire.
After the parade, students displayed their hats in their classrooms, and shared
information with parents and guests about the geography, climate, population and
state bird for each respective state. The children read from the books they created
about their particular state.
Debbie Miller, Head of the Lower School, said the States Fair programming is a
Lower School tradition.
“Alum will sing and still remember the states they did,” said Mrs. Miller. “My son is a
daddy of three, and he [participated while] in the Lower School.”
She added that it’s more than studying the states; it is an integrated curriculum
tying in music, arts and dance.
Otis Jarvis, father of 2nd Grader Zach Jarvis, enjoyed the parade and classroom
presentation, and is looking forward to seeing his son perform the state songs
during Fifty Nifty, the grade-wide musical celebration of all 50 states. Nifty Fifty will
be held in Oates Theater at a later time.
