Collegiate School’s 4th Graders presented An American Mosaic – From Sea to Shining Sea in the Lower School this morning to showcase their knowledge of U.S. history and its earliest citizens.
During the production, some students played instruments, performed songs and delivered speeches for parents and other guests. Others participated by providing artwork that represented important figures in history.
According to Laura Fields, Assistant Head of Collegiate’s Lower School, students had an opportunity to choose how they would participate in the program, which is performed by the 4th Grade every year.
“Students selected themselves for roles, playing on their individual desires [to] sing, speak, draw,” said Ms. Fields. “Students learned to be mindful of what skillset each of these needed and which one they felt [comfortable performing]. This is a departure from the past, where we held auditions for singers and selected the best. We now hold students responsible for the role they want to play in the production.”
To prepare for today’s program, the students visited Washington D.C. to learn more about the figures they would be representing, so they could deliver accurate portrayals, Ms. Fields said.
Five 4th Graders gave speeches about the historical figures Daniel Boone, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Jefferson and Sacagawea onstage, and the instrumental music and songs saluted early Americans’ and their heroism.
Lower School mom Maya Peskin praised the students’ efforts.
“I think it’s wonderful that they are learning about history,” said Ms. Peskin, whose daughter, Hadley, is a 4th Grader. “The special facts they are learning in history will help them in the present and provide a greater future.”
Congratulations to our 4th Graders and thanks to all who contributed to the production.
