Collegiate Robotics Team Scores a Win

Collegiate School's 2016 FIRST Robotics Team completed its first-ever qualifying competition in first place.

Torch 5804, as the team is known, garnered the win at a Hampton Roads district qualifying event this past weekend, as part of an Alliance - a robotics competition partnership comprised of teams from three schools.

Collegiate's teammates were members of Team 5546 from the Appomattox Regional Governor's School in Petersburg, and Team 122, which includes students from eight public and independent high schools in the Tidewater area.

"It's always amazing for a rookie team to win a district competition; but the teams we faced this year are highly-regarded, well-known teams," said Daniel Bartels, Collegiate's Middle and Upper School STEAM Coordinator. "One of them was the No. 1 seed. (Our) kids were really surprised."

Mr. Bartels serves as a mentor to Collegiate's FIRST Robotics Team, along with Upper School physics teacher Greg Sesny.

Torch 5804 will compete in its next district qualifying event this weekend in Doswell, in a bid to make it to the District Championship in Maryland next month. Interested individuals can watch this weekend's matches via webcast here: https://www.firstchesapeake.org/.
