BY ASHLEY JONES Collegiate 3rd Graders made parents and other special guests proud this morning when they donned period attire, gave speeches and delivered performances to showcase their knowledge during the School’s annual Colonial Days program.
The 3rd Graders have been learning about the colonial era since January and as part of their curriculum studies visited Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg, and learned about Colonial-time trades from professionals who visited Collegiate to teach them about different trades.
Laura Fields, Assistant Head of Lower School, said the today’s program today was a result of project-based learning, for which students had to research the geography, way of life and different industries that existed in that time.
Third Grade teacher Katie Musick said they were given an overview of the times and had to choose one area of knowledge in which to be an expert. Having that option made them more interested in their research, she said.
“Today is a culminating experience of what they have learned,” Ms. Musick said.
The morning consisted of a range of activities, including students sharing books they have written, a wax museum where they pretended to be colonial characters, slideshow presentations and a simulation of Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg. To wrap up the morning, the 3rd Graders performed songs and dances for the crowd.
Mary Jo Kahn, grandmother of 3rd Grader Mary Ellis Logan, said that she is never disappointed with these events and looks forward to them every time.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” she said. “I am impressed beyond words. My kids even went here and participated in things like this, and every year it gets better all the time.”
