The entire 5th Grade enjoyed a fun and educational activity last week that brought their year-long water studies full circle: The 2016 Water Olympics.
The Middle Schoolers began their exploration by reading the book "A Long Walk to Water," through which they learned about one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan - Salva Dut - who ultimately gives back to his homeland of South Sudan by building wells.
"Our students are so moved by Salva's story that they want to make a difference," says Middle School Humanities teacher Laurie Shadowen. "So over the years, our students continually raise money to help build wells through Salva's organization."
Fifth Graders continued learning about the importance of clean water throughout their history studies, by exploring how water was the reason ancient civilizations survived the hardships of their times. "The last two units they study are Rome and Greece, so we love to combine the Olympics with the water theme and have a celebration of both," says Mrs. Shadowen.
