Upper Schoolers Experience Cross-Cultural Connectedness

Summer is in full swing and many Collegiate School Upper School students have been traveling the globe to make the most of their time outside the classroom.

Through true engagement with the broader world, Collegiate’s rising 9th through 12th Graders have had opportunities to continue growing into global citizens.

Experiencing other cultures fosters the necessary skills that encourage students to see the interconnectedness of the world and how they can work collaboratively to solve problems, said Director of International Programs Erica Coffey.

Five faculty- and staff-led trips in June and July gave 59 students this memorable chance.

Here’s a roundup of their exciting journeys:

Costa Rica
Seven students participated in a service internship with Collegiate partner program Lacrosse the Nations, an organization that teaches life skills through sports and physical education classes.

Iceland
Fourteen students who participated in Collegiate’s special interest club, Outdoor Collegiate, embarked on an experiential learning adventure of hiking, camping, snorkeling, caving and glacier exploring.

Nicaragua
Fourteen Cougars worked with children at Los Quinchos, a home for children, on a variety of service programs and learned about the challenges facing the small, close-knit community of San Marcos.

Spain
Families from our partner school in Sevilla, Spain, hosted 16 Collegiate students for a home stay, followed by a homestay in Cadiz. Students attended a language school, visited several cities and even learned how to surf!

Belize
Collegiate’s final summer trip launched this week, with eight students who are interested in health care careers embarking on a three-week intensive, hands-on learning experience in partnership with Duke University and Harvard University. While in Belize (through Aug. 3), the students will shadow health care professionals as they treat patients in clinics and in their homes.
