The teams’ annual November match-up coincided with Homecoming this year, and as the last Prep League game of the season, Collegiate’s friendly rivalry with St. Christopher’s reached fever pitch on the field.
It was a festive day of fun, fellowship and food as folks decked out in green and gold gathered in the stands and along the sidewalks adjacent to Grover Jones Field to celebrate Collegiate. The previous evening, more than 400 alumni enjoyed each other’s company, oysters and music by Gallatin Canyon at the 33rd Annual Oyster Roast, hosted by Sue and Tad Thompson ʼ66 at Tuckahoe Plantation.
The festivities carried over into today, as alumni caught up at the Legacy Society Lunch (for Cougars who graduated in 1915-1965) in Centennial Hall and the 50th Reunion Luncheon in the Alumni/Development building, as well as around food trucks and tents near the Lower School playground.
Cougar alum Frank Heiner ‘66 chatted with Bill and Midge Preston ‘69 at the 50th Reunion Luncheon about coming back to Collegiate and reconnecting with former classmates.
“The people are important. The ties are important,” Mr. Heiner said. “And even though we may not have seen each other that much, the friendships and relationships are still vibrant.”
Before kickoff, Mayme Beth Donohue ‘03 and Lizzie Cox ‘00 echoed that sentiment.
“Homecoming reinforces what makes Collegiate special,” Ms. Donohue said. “This place is your home no matter how long you’ve been gone.”
The first half of the game was all Collegiate, with the Cougars pouncing in the first 45 seconds of the game. At halftime, with the score 30-7, seniors and their parents took the field and then the Homecoming Court was announced in pairs: Jordan Marcus and Jess Speight, Ah’rea Jones and Barry Burgess (Ah'rea was unable to attend, so the Cougar stood in for her.), Olivia Jacobs and Grant Villanueva, Gwin Sinnott and Reese Bowling, Kate Surgner and Excellence Perry, and Emily Stallings and Shaan Sharma.
Homecoming King Grant Villanueva was crowned at the all-school Pep Rally on Friday morning. Gwin Sinnott was crowned Homecoming Queen before the capacity crowd at Grover Jones Field.
In the second half, St. Christopher’s came out strong and put 15 points on the board, but the Cougar defense denied the Saints in the last seconds of the game to win 30-22.
It was a great day to be a Cougar!
