Collegiate Alum Shares Muslim Experience with Middle Schoolers
BY ASHLEY JONES Collegiate’s Middle School continued its Religion Assembly Series today with a visit from Collegiate alum and VCU student, Ezoza Nomazova ’13.
The focus of the religion series has been to educate 5th through 8th Graders about prayer in major world religions. Ezoza sat down with Middle School English teacher Weldon Bradshaw for a Q&A to discuss her experiences as a Muslim who practices Islam.
“Prayer cultivates brotherhood and equality,” said Ezoza, who shared with students that Muslims typically pray five times a day. “It doesn’t separate you based on color, nationality or status.”
Ezoza also detailed her transition from Uzbekistan to Richmond during her sophomore year of high school, and how she adapted to Collegiate.
Ezoza encouraged students to “make a choice” to understand that not all Muslims are the same and that it is important to learn about their beliefs and accept people as individuals.
A trained pianist, Ezoza played one of her favorite piano pieces for students before the assembly ended.
