BY ASHLEY JONES Collegiate’s robotics team, TORCH 5804, are traveling to St. Louis today, to participate in the FIRST Robotics Championship world competition.
TORCH 5804 is the only rookie team from the Richmond area attending this global event, and one of eight rookie teams overall, according to Daniel Bartels, Collegiate’s Middle School and Upper School STEAM Coordinator, who is coaching the team along with Upper School physics teacher Greg Sesny.
Before their departure, the team was sent off with encouragement during yesterday’s Upper School assembly.
Mr. Bartels introduced a 360-degree camera to the students and explained how the students will be able to use it to follow the championship virtually.
“I really want to take everyone with me,” Mr. Bartels said. “This is the cheapest way to do it.”
A member of the robotics team, Quinn Schebell, shared his excitement about the upcoming competition with fellow students and also sent out an invitation to participate.
“We’re going to Worlds - that’s big,” he said. “Where do we go from there? If you like robotics, then we encourage you to join. We need all of you to come and see what we do.”
This is the first time Collegiate has hosted a robotics team since the early 1980s. Within TORCH 5804’s inaugural year, the team has been awarded two rookie awards and placed 1st in the Chesapeake District Championship.
The competition will be held in St. Louis on April 27-30.
