Collegiate Fourth Graders Celebrate “Cinco De Values”
BY ASHLEY JONES
Collegiate School 4th Graders joined fellow students and parents last night in Centennial Hall for a potluck dinner celebrating their study of Collegiate’s five core values.
The culmination of their review was a book they produced called Cougar Pact, to highlight their understanding of the five values, which are: honor, love of learning, excellence, respect and community. The book features text as well as illustrations created by the students.
Each 4th Grade family brought a dish from that family's country of origin, allowing them to experience the cultures of different families. During the dinner, the books were displayed as centerpieces, giving guests the opportunity to read.
Lower School Counselor Marella Gregory has orchestrated the event for the past 10 years and enjoys allowing students and their families to come together.
“This is a ...celebration of what they’ve learned, and it’s very fun.”
Courtney Ferrell, mother of 4th Grader Giles Ferrell, was delighted to attend the dinner.
“One of the things we liked about Collegiate was that it had a rich community of culture,” she said. “I get to live in Richmond and meet this woman from Austria. It’s nice to get to experience that. Out of all things they are learning, character values are most important.”
Renata Eberl, mother of 4th Grader Sebastian Eberl, agreed. Originally from Austria, she said it’s nice to have this event for Collegiate families with an international background.
After dinner, the students played outside and also cut a cake specially made by Ms. Gregory to celebrate the anniversary of the Cinco de Values program.
