Second Graders Use Engineering Skills to Build Zoo

Collegiate 2nd Graders completed their Build-a-Zoo unit last week with the construction of the Collegiate Zoo, which was open for touring by other Lower Schoolers today. The zoo included more than 100 animals built to 1/6 scale and featured more than 30 engineering projects.
The students' Build-a-Zoo unit began with a trip to Metro Richmond Zoo, where they collected information on specific animals and engineering projects. Following the zoo trip, the students conducted further research on their animals and worked in groups to create informative, self- supporting signs for zoo visitors. In math, the students created zoo maps and learned about designing to scale. Each child then built a moveable scale-model of their animal. Lastly, students worked in groups to construct engineering projects specific to our zoo, such as cardboard bridges, paper trees, an observation platform with a spiral ramp, ticket machines, sky rides, a zipline, motorized kiddie rides, bleachers, a picnic area and a giraffe petting platform.
Great job, 2nd Graders!
