Model UN/International Relations and Service Clubs Welcome John Dau

Collegiate School 7th and 8th Grade Model UN/International Relations and Service Clubs welcomed Global Scholar-in-Residence John Dau to speak about the history of the conflict between Sudan and South Sudan. Middle School Model UN students are currently studying South Sudan and surrounding African countries, reading Mr. Dau’s book, Lost Boy, Lost Girl and meeting with Mr. Dau periodically for additional insights into this fascinating part of the world.

Mr. Dau shared the history of Sudan, the nation's connections with neighboring African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, the 2011 creation of the independent nation of the Republic of South Sudan, as well as the role he and the U.S. played in the founding of South Sudan. Mr. Dau helped students understand the strong governmental institution we have in the U.S. by linking the processes established in the constitution to the recent presidential election.

At the outset of 2017, the Model UN Club will begin preparing for the Middle School Model UN conference held annually at the College of William & Mary. As part of the conference, 7th and 8th Graders representing Collegiate will be assigned a country, United Nations committees and/or NGOs (nongovernmental organizations). The students, or “delegates,” will debate current issues on the United Nations' vast agenda. They will prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts and navigate the United Nations' rules of procedure – all in the interest of resolving problems that affect the world.

The 7th and 8th Grade Service Club offers a group of students the opportunity to participate, plan and execute a service-learning project in the Richmond community. The club provides an excellent leadership opportunity for participants and the opportunity to make a meaningful positive difference in the lives of those they select to serve.
