Collegiate School’s Director of Athletics Andrew Stanley, coaches, teammates, and families gathered in Oates Theater to celebrate seven student-athletes from the Class of 2025 for their commitment to continuing their careers as NCAA athletes. Congrats, Cougars! You make us proud.
Brandon Anderson, Football, Bridgewater College
“Three winters ago, I was at a basketball game and I found Brandon’s mom and dad. I said to them, ‘Get Brandon back out on the football field — because I know he was a heck of a football player growing up — and he'll be a college football player in two years. I guarantee you that.’ Nothing’s given when it comes to sports, but, two years later, Brandon earned a college football spot. He turned himself into one of the best wide receivers in the state — there's no doubt. This kid's ceiling is way up there. He hasn’t even come close to touching his potential on a football field. So I can't wait to watch you these next four years, and good luck at Bridgewater.”
-Collin McConaghy, Head Coach
Anne Randall Berkeyheiser, Field Hockey, University of Mary Washington
“Anne has been a valuable asset to our field hockey program as a whole throughout her career here. She's competitive, spicy, strong, and will give you absolutely everything she has, leaving nothing out on the field. She asks great questions, she's very open to feedback, she’s eager to grow and learn in order to get better, gives 100% to her teammates all the time, and has a relentless drive to improve, putting in the extra time and reps. All of these qualities will really help her excel at the next level.”
-Kelsey Smither, Head Coach
Betsy Clarke, Lacrosse, Washington and Lee
“Betsy is a leader for our team in her play and her thoughtful approach towards her teammates. She keeps things light when we need it and isn't afraid to lead us through the harder moments. She made varsity as a Freshman and has been a contributor ever since. Betsy was All-LIS and, so far in her career, has notched 76 goals, 45 assists, 14 cross turnovers, 28 ground balls, and 10 draw controls. Washington and Lee is lucky to be getting a great lacrosse player and an even better person.”
-Carter Toohers, Head Coach
Sam Hahn, Golf, Hampden-Sydney College
“Sam has left an indelible mark on the Collegiate golf program. Last year, he served as the lone captain and led a group that was relatively inexperienced at the varsity level. He has gone head-to-head with each school's best player every match this year. Sam has been instrumental in two prep league championships and the back-to-back state championships of 2021 and 2022 during his tenure with us. I would be remiss if I only talked about Sam's golf career and not the kind of person he is. He's mature, honest, supportive, and empathetic. He's the kind of person you want your son to be like. Sam joins some of his former Collegiate teammates with the Hampden-Sydney program, and we're excited to follow his success there. The Tigers are getting a really good one.”
-Shep Lewis, Head Coach
Keigan Hayes, Football, Bridgewater College
“Keigan shows up every day and brings joy to the football field. We asked Keegan to do a lot for us. Whether it's on the offensive line or defensive line, we asked him to be ready to go both ways, and he took on a huge role for us as a defensive lineman these past two years. He had great numbers, worked his tail off in the weight room, and just came in and not only fit into our culture but enhanced our culture. I couldn’t be more excited for Keigan to continue his career at Bridgewater next year.”
-Collin McConaghy, Head Coach
Josh Parker, Soccer, Bridgewater College
“Josh is one of the few players that have gone through Collegiate’s boys soccer program since the 1980s that has won four straight Prep League titles. In fact, after reviewing all the stats, Josh has won 75 games, lost six, and tied five in his four-year career with Collegiate’s boys soccer program, making him the winningest boys soccer player of all time. So, needless to say, Josh leaves a great imprint on our program. We're really excited about his next step at Bridgewater College. We'll follow him closely and cheer hard for him.”
-Rob Ukrop, Head Coach
Maris Smutz, Lacrosse, Washington and Lee
“Maris is a complete attacker. Her defenders are always wondering where she went while she's busy scoring again and again. She feeds the ball right into her teammates’ sticks and makes it look easy. She's the first one to cheer for her teammates’ success, and she leads by example every day. We will miss you next year, Maris, but we can't wait to see all the big things you do at Washington and Lee.”
