Collegiate School 2nd Graders welcomed family members this evening to Night of Light, an exhibition of their Studio Two artwork, in the Estes Multipurpose Room.
As part of their 2nd Grade art curriculum, students in Studio Two create works of art using the theme of light to support Collegiate’s partner school, Jams Academy, in Cameroon. The Studio Two artwork is available for purchase and raises funds that go toward purchasing textbooks and Little Sun solar-powered lanterns for Jams Academy, so that the school’s students can read and write in their homes in the evening.
The 2nd Graders have enjoyed coming up with their creations, said Lower School art teacher Heather Bruneau, who organized the event.
“Students exemplify Responsible Citizenship as they are beacons of light themselves,” said Ms. Bruneau, referencing the School’s JK-12 initiative to help students grow and thrive. (Learn more about Responsible Citizenship here.) “By shining a light, they are able to bring awareness to a situation. Through Studio Two, students exchange ideas and foster relationships with students their own age at Jams.”
This evening’s event began with a Chinese shadow puppet performance and a student presentation about the history of Chinese shadow puppet theater, Studio Two and Jams Academy. Guests had the opportunity to view the artwork and Little Sun lanterns available for purchase; read using a Little Sun lantern in the Reading Nook; learn about InLight Richmond, a free, public exhibition of light-based art and performances (featuring Collegiate alum True Harrigan ‘09), and meet the artists.
“The Studio Two program is an opportunity for students to look for ways to shine their own light in the world and to connect with our greater global community,” Ms. Bruneau said.
Student artwork will be available for purchase before and after school from Nov. 13-14 in the Weinstein Gallery.
