The Collegiate Upper School woodworking program provides one avenue for students to grow and learn new skills as they each develop an individual awareness of themselves. Our students’ hands get dirty, they take risks with new tools and they learn to visualize before they commit. Our efforts emanate from the earth itself – trees and wood. Our varied furniture finishes derive from pine solvents, resins from lac beetles in Asia, natural oils from flax seed and tung trees, and beeswax. Students also get to handle, work with and study numerous species of wood from around the globe. In the process, they learn about sustainability and preservation issues affecting our planet’s forests. Our Art Walk 2020 includes some images that suggest something of what students deal with in our program offerings. Our 9th through 12th Graders all develop strategies that will help guide them through their Upper School years and beyond. – Steve Hart, Upper School art teacher
